One box down...

After meeting upon meeting, review of by-laws and membership agreements, researching, calling, inviting and investigating we finally got to get outside and build something together (if anyone from Lowe's is reading this, I put that one in for free. We'd like the next one sponsored or else I might type something like "You can do it, we can..") As you can see from the pictures several neighbors, adult, child and canine converged on 70th and Puget Sound to mow, partially layout the site and build one, yes one, beautiful box. We were able even to fill it with dirt, good ole dirt.

Rest assured, this is just the beginning.  If you'd like to get involved, below is a schedule of our next few events.  We're also happy to receive donations.  Currently we have enough money to build 8 boxes with enough room to build 16.

Saturday, April 11 9:00-1:00  Boxbuilding.  Build 7 more boxes at the garden site.
Saturday, April 18 Time TBD Community Yard Sale at the garden site. Bring your stuff to sell and donate a portion to the garden.
Thursday, April 23 7:00 Planning Meeting at First Congregational Church
Saturday, May 11 Planting Day!

The Garden Design

Members of the South Tacoma Community Garden met on Thursday evening to take all of our ideas and meld them into one design.  Below you will see the fruit (or should I say vegetables or even flowers) of that work.

Right now it may just look like a parking lot for construction paper, but if you squint a little and use a lot of your imagination then you will be able to see  "We've got gadgets and gizmos aplenty, we've got whoosits and whatsits galore, you want thingamabobos, we've got twenty..." wait sorry, wrong imagination.  Try this...

We've got sunflowers and raspberries a plenty
We've got herbs and fruit trees galore
You want raised beds?  We've got 16,
but who cares, no big deal, you want more?

How bout benches for sitting?
How bout a see through fence for a boundary and best of all
How bout a huge table in the middle for gathering and sitting and eating some of the fruits of our labors?

If you'd like to stay in the loop or are interested in renting a raised bed and becoming a member of the garden then e-mail kwsikes@hotmail.com.

Til then, may all your seeds live long and prosper.

What do you see?

How did Picasso feel when he first sat before a blank canvas?
How about Michelangelo before a lump of clay
Or how do you think Paula Dean feels when she first stands in front of a hot skillet with a stick of butta?

Now, take a look at this picture and begin to imagine what might be.

Recently JT Curry, owner of Motors Northwest offered to donate this plot of land (which sits at the corner of 70th and Puget Sound) to the neighborhood for a community garden.  A few of your neighbors  along with the assistance of Harvest Northwest have taken him up on his offer and begun planning and dreaming of what might one day be.

If you would like to join us in this process, then we invite you to attend our next planning meeting on:  Thursday, February 26th at 7:00 at First Congregational Church (corner of Puget Sound and 72nd, come in through the kitchen door).

Until then, if you have any questions or comments you can e-mail Ken Sikes (kwsikes@hotmail.com) or Charrie Hayward (wolfeatsdove@comcast.net).
